Continuum of Activities

The list below represents a continuum of activities: resources categorized by Standard/Eligible Content that teachers may use to move students toward proficiency. Using LEA curriculum and available materials and resources, teachers can customize the activity statements/questions for classroom use.

This continuum of activities offers:

  • Instructional activities designed to be integrated into planned lessons

  1. Define sentence fragments.

  2. Define run-on sentences.
  1. Categorize sentences in a passage as fragment or run on.
  1. Review and edit writing to eliminate fragments and run ons.  Identify run ons and fragments, and make edits to resolve them. 

Answer Key/Rubric

  1. Student defines sentence fragment as a string of words that cannot stand alone as a full thought. The sentence may be missing a subject and/or a verb.

  2. Student defines run on sentence as one that contains two or more independent clauses without appropriate punctuation or a conjunction.

  3. Student will categorize sentences as either run-on or fragments.  Sources for the activity can be found online including:   
  1. Student demonstrates an ability to edit for run on sentences and fragments and makes adjustments to resolve those errors.
